His dreams were interrupted by the beep of medical monitors, and playgrounds were replaced by congested hospital rooms. At the tender age of three, Debit’s laughter should have been echoing in the remote hills of his hometown, Rolpa, but instead, it was his cries that were echoing within the sterile walls of Kanti Hospital.
Debit’s story is woven with both resilience and struggle. We had stood by his side since the beginning of his fight against Neuroblastoma, a cancer that invaded the small glands on top of his kidneys. With ICU hums haunting him, his body scarred with side effects and lack of blood platelets, he had won each round of chemotherapy, completing the exhausting 9th cycle.
Debit, against all odds, was completing his active treatments. The halls of the hospital now filled with whispers of hope. Plans were made to send him back to the embrace of his hometown, Rolpa, where the rustling leaves and familiar landscapes awaited his return. However, amidst the celebration and the anticipation of a homecoming, the cruelest blow struck. His cancer relapsed.
In the midst of this battle, Debit, in his tiny frame, broke his leg, a painful addition to the trials he faced daily. Each day, he grew weaker. Debit’s parents exhausted whatever resources they had to ensure their son received the best care. But the financial strain reached a point where continuing the treatment became near to impossible. His legs and muscles had given up, but his heart hadn’t. Debit was a warrior who was battling the harsh disease everyday.
Regrettably, despite the collective efforts from both our organization and Debit’s side, his journey came to an end. On the afternoon of December 12, 2023, Debit passed away in the loving embrace of his mother. His story showcases the harsh and unjust nature of childhood cancer, emphasizing the crucial importance of raising awareness among children and their parents.
